HewesBeav, if your wanting to go into the lakes and the ocean for big swimmers, my recommendation would be the sportsman with a prop. I had one of the early River Runners with a jet and was convinced first trip out in the deep water that a prop was the way to go and have been that way every since. That sportsman is a FINE boat, not familiar with the thunderjet other than seeing them sitting waiting to launch. They look real spendy.....if you want performance over eyecandy....go with the Hewescraft...."tougher than a lighter knot". The deep V you'll appreciate specially when you take it to the big water. Good luck. From the land of the smokin camels.....John

This is a great site to learn about Hewscraft boats and having more than 125 members, there is a great deal of boating experience to boot. This site has been phenomenal help to many Hewescraft (old and new) boat owners. I appreciate that you are on our site and hopefully are genuinely interested in Hewescraft boats. With that said, I also hope this thread isn't some kind of attempt to persuade some of my fellow Hewescraft owners to buy something else!
I'm going to guess the guys wouldn't like that too much.
But seriously though, I can't imagine that you need to spend high $20's for a good Hewescraft with 18 Sportsman or the River Runner models.
Anyway, maybe someone else can chime in here and offer this new member some help with ideas...Good Luck.

Tom

Thanks for the information. Do you have trim tabs on your boat & how is your performance out of the hole with the 17 pitch and a load on?
My boat currently has the 15 pitch prop on it, but no trim tabs.
My first project this winter is to install some trim tabs & then I plan to try the 13.5" x 17 pitch next spring in both a 3 blade aluminum prop & a 4 blade stainless prop.

I have been running a yamaha aluminum 17 pitch on my 22 FT since August. With 85 gallons of fuel, three people and fishing equipment, I get 5700 RPM's and a top end of 36 MPH. I just tried a 15 pitch prop, and it gives me 300 more RPM's, but I lost about 1 MPH. I am going to try and figure out the MPG this week, so i will keep you posted.

What props are folks out there running on the 115 Yamaha 4 stroke & a 22 ft SeaRunner HT? Just thought I'd see what was being used as far as WOT rpm's, # of blades, pitch & diameter goes, I'm not concerned with speeds.

Chuck,
Thanks for the update and I am glad the prop is
working for you. What do you think the top RPM will be at WOT? I went climbing
into my boat last week and sat inside while it was pouring down rain. It has
been around 40 degrees all winter here and what snow we had is gone. The winter
storms have been pounding the ocean with wind and rain and there is usually one
or two days a week that are still good for boating so if I can hit the weather
just right I may go fishing. My friend has been going out on his 38 Uniflite
every week and catching Kings! The days are really short right now and I am
looking forward to Spring when there is more light and a little warmer. I will
see about getting the 17 pitch SS prop for mine and see how it does. Thanks
again for the update. Brian G

Brian,
My dealer in Pasco has been reading our discussion and
called me with a black SS 13 3/4 X 17 prop to finally replace
the Merc I have been using. Had the opportunity to put it
on and fish for a couple days over Thanksgiving. You are
right--its the best prop for the boat. The water
conditions were a little too choppy to get a good run at top
speed, but it is smooth up to 5500 rpms and for the short time
we were at WOT, I could tell it was the best I have
experienced. Another thing that I think helped a lot was
the dealer ordered the brass spacer and the SS plate that is
suppose to be installed with this prop. Thanks for
all the information. I have taken some pictures of my boat
and will post them for you to look at. Hope your winter in
Alaska is mild and short.
Regards,
Chuck.

Man it's been quiet here this fall I was thinking we all must be out hunting!! I put the hewes to bed for the winter last week. most of the lakes are freezing or are so low the ramps are way out of the water. We used it to get five deer and some goose hunting, but when we go to pull it out of the water the ice is all over the ramp and need to use the wench to get the truck back up ( thats WAY to much work!)So the rest of the year will have to be on foot, Ice fishing here we come!!
