Brian TG Thanks for the recommendations. On balancing the weight in the boat, I guess I was operating under the assumption that I should keep most of the weight forward(at least around the seats) to help get the bow down. I'm probably just wanting too much out of the motor. The problem is that I generally run the boat up to the bank to either wander along and fish, or to look for birds, (ducks, pheasant) and getting back into the river, I'm struggling to get the boat moving again. It's mostly gravel rock bottom, but the deep spots never correspond with the getting out spots. Once I get her goin though, she runs great over the shallows.

i have a 97 16' riverrunner. im currently running a 90hp prop on it but i'm upgrading to a 150hp with a jet on it. My manual said the tank in it was 35gallons but Ive never been able to get more then 28 in it. I bought the boat new. The manual disappeared some time ago so sorry I can't get you a copy of it. As for your cavitation issues. Best I can say is to make sure that your intake is clean. Would be good to check your impeller and to make sure your shimmed right.

For as built information on your boat, all you need to do is submit the hull id # (serial #) to hewescraft's technical people & they should be able to tell you the original specs for your boat. Just get your serial # & log onto to hewescraft's website, click on contact hewescraft & send them an email with what you are looking for along with the serial #. This should also work with mercury on the outboard. You should also be able to find manuals on the outboard from your local boat shop. There are a couple of companies that print the after market manuals for outboards.

The best way to find out if your motor is running
in the proper range is to get a tachometer. If you determine the rpm is not in
range then you can go about on your troubleshooting. If the impeller was worn
out of limits I dont think it would make the engine sputter but it might make
the rpm vary wildly as it is trying to grab water and cavitating. If there is no
data tag on your fuel tank in view you may have to pull up the floor and find it
or measure your tank with a tape measure. You can get the volume in inches such
as 54" long 18" wide and 10" deep. You multiply these numbers together and
divide by 232 and you will be fairly accurate on the gallons in the tank. The
boat will perform the best when it is balanced right so you will have to
experiment with moving weight around and the attitude of the boat. You dont want
the bow driving down or the stearn squatting. The best angle and speed can be
determined by experimenting. Hope that advice helps. Brian

I recently bought a 96 Hewes craft, 16 foot river runner. 125 Merc outboard, 2 stroke, with a jet foot. I've no clue how big the gas tank is, and the gauge decided not to work. How should weight be distributed to get on to a plane the fastest? Does it matter? At high R.P.M. the motor...sputters...for lack of a better word. Is the impeller cavitating? Do they do that? There's no owners manual or technical manual, I can't find anything on the internet except you guys, and my local dealer said there are no manuals in existence. Any info or references would be greatly appreciated. I love playing on the river in this boat, and it would be great to know what the boat's supposed to do, relative to what I'm making it do. Thanks!

Chuck,
Wow, it does sound like we have almost identical
boats. I have a T8 kicker that is remote control with power tilt, elec start, etc
but the rest is about the same. I had a canvas made from Hewes that covers the
stern and the standard front canvas. I just built some would support frames and
put underneath as we are getting close to having some real snow up here. I live
in Kenai, Alaska which is 150 miles from Anchorage. The lakes will be freezing
in about a month but we can boat almost year round in the salt. We do have
occasions where the salt water freezes over in the boat harbors but that is
usually February when it has been -20 for awhile. I want to get a heater for
mine too so I can go winter salmon fishing out of Homer and Seward in March.
Nov-Feb is usually too cold to really have fun and the days are really short on
light. We did have a winter about 3 years ago where I boated all winter and the
large lakes did not freeze up. Global warming at its finest! 41 years up here
and that is the only winter I have seen that. I have always wanted to boat
around Lake Chelan and the Columbia so maybe one of these summers I will tow the
boat down and go boating with you. I am trying to get a Hewescraft Regatta
together up here next summer for June or July and so some serious exploring and
camping out in Prince William Sound. I have been boating out there for 28 years
and it is awesome in the summer! If you want a real adventure with your boat and
family think about hauling it up here. It is about 4400 miles R/T from E
Washington. Well, if you get the 17" S/S let me know how it works as I hope the
dealer up here can get one as well. My pictures are on the Hewes site under
BrianTG. Anyone else out there that is interested in a big Hewes get together
for next summer send me a line. Brian G

Brian, Thanks for all the information. Sounds like we have identical boats and this will really help me with the dealer--he's trying hard to find the best SS prop for the boat. My water temperature is 59 degrees at Lake Chelan in central Washington--where are you located with 40 degree water? I'll look for your pictures. My pictures will be posted as soon as I can. My boat is a white 05-22 ET Hardtop with 150-4 stroke Yamaha and 15-4 stroke kicker on a Tricker trailer. I couldn't afford the price for power steering particularly after adding up the rest of the accessories-- ordered it with 85 gallon gas tank, carpeted side walls, sharkhide, auto bilge, sleeper seats, two rod lockers, a top center Go Lite, Lawrance 480, and a water ski knob welded to the top of the cabin. I also opted for the step down extended transom which I welded a flip style ladder in the corner. I have mounted a Scotty downrigger on the starboard side and have a Big Jon planer board on the port side. I have mounted dual rod holders at the base of the back windows and drilled 1 3/8" holes (with rubber gromets) in the overhang to accomodate 8'6" poles during fishing activities of the day. My next projects will be to put a Mr. Heater on the inside step and a 2 gallon propane tank under the step--its getting cold and there is at least a month of fishing left in central Washington and northern Idaho. Maybe next summer I will tackle a fish cleaning/bait table and washdown system-seems there is always more to do--but I love it. Chuck.

Hey I'm back after a brief recess. This summer has been awesome for fishing and we have been out over 60 days of fishing since I got the boat in the water in June. Got some pretty good fish: 260lb halibut and probably 10 over 80 lbs. Caught my first king here as well. Several times I lost my entire rig, flasher and to the mainline while fighting salmon in the bay. I saw a very large dark object surface and thought maybe I could catch it. My friend and I lost many, many rigs, but after experimenting with cable leaders four feet long and 16 feet of wind-on 400lb test mono leaders, hooked and boated a 350 lb salmon shark. Over the next three weeks we hooked over 20 sharks and released 10 from the boat. The biggest we caught (estimating from the video) was about 10 feet long and about 600+ lbs. We kept two, 350 lbs and 410lbs. The meat is actually very good. I have caught many big fish, but these sharks fight like nothing else. I fought the 410 lb shark for 90 minutes. I went home after that battle. I was using a okuma reel with 900 feet of mainline. The fish took over half my line from the reel in about 5 seconds. I'm jealous of your hunting trips. I had to forgo the annual Kodiak Blacktail hunt due to my second daughter birth in December (can't wait). I do get to go on a elk hunt with my sister in Oregon in late November though. Anybody have any tips on Elk hunting on the Oregon coast? This will be our first time not going east. John

From: BrianTG1
Message 15 in Discussion
Chuck,
I did some tests this weekend with my 22HT and I
found the best prop for all around performance was a Yamaha 14 5/8 X 16. It
gave me 5900 RPM with 70 gallons of fuel and 500 pounds of people. The
water temp was 40F, wind calm, elevation 50 feet in fresh water. In a very
light weight situation the 14 1/2 X 17 might work but I could only get 5400
RPM. I tryed a S/S 13 3/4 X 19 and could only get 5300 RPM but it was the
fastest prop with 41-42 MPH. I think the best one with the most speed would be
a S/S 13 3/4 X 17 and I didnt have one of those to try. I am sure it would
give 5600 RPM at my load and give the best fuel economy between 4000-5000 RPM.
I lost about 1 MPH and .2 MPG with the aluminum 16 pitch but as I mentioned I
have the best RPM range and I should be able to put 4 normal size guys and 85
gallons of fuel and get full rated RPM. With all the props I tested I got
39-42 MPH so I think that is about all she will do. I will put a post in here
if I get to try the S/S 17 pitch. Talk later, Brian

Okay. Back from the lake this weekend and although I am not always right, I am seldom wrong--except this time! I was so sure of my super sonic speed (50 plus mph) but now have egg on my face. And I was so sure my speed was 52-54 mph that I had my wife ready with digital camera to record the event for the Forum. I reached 52 on my fishfinder speedometer and paged over to GPS for my moment in history...that's when I discovered my true speed was 39 mph-40 mph. Apparently, I never had checked GPS at open throttle before--I remember checking it at slower speeds and the two were within 1 mph of each other. Well what can I say except thanks for a little reality. Strange thing, I suddenly feel slow!! Appreciate all the help with prop information. Chuck
